External SxS Card Readers

Solution Most laptops do not have built-in readers for SxS cards, which means you’ll need to use a photographer’s external reader any time you need to pull something off their card. We recommend following a specific sequence of steps when you do this:

1. Plug the external card reader into your laptop without any card inside. Wait about a second for the reader to be recognized. You should hear Windows make a chime indicating that a device has been connected. Note: If you open “This PC” in File Explorer, you may see a “USB Device” listed at this point. This is normal. If you don’t see it, that’s also fine.

2. Insert the SxS card into the external reader until the light on the reader turns red. After a few seconds, the light should then turn green. In File Explorer, you should now see a device called “XDCAM_[a bunch of numbers]”. If you only see a “USB Device” at this point, then the card has not been properly read. If it repeatedly fails, try restarting your PC before reattempting.

That’s it. First plug in the reader, wait a second, then insert the card. Our working theory is that this is because Windows needs to first recognize that a card reader has been connected before it can properly detect the card via the reader. By plugging in the external reader with a card already inserted, you’re effectively connecting both devices at the exact same time, and these laptops evidently don’t like that.

If you follow the above procedure and your laptop is still having persistent issues detecting SxS cards, you may be in need of driver maintenance. Please submit a ticket if you think that’s the case.
