The KATU Engineering Department is typically staffed Monday through Friday. Weekend emergencies should be directed to the on-call engineer.

Parking lot gate

Closing of the vehicle gates in both the south and north lots operates on a laser-reflector-sensor system: a laser crosses the span of the gate and is reflected back to a sensor. When the laser is properly reflected, the gate closes after a delay. If the laser is blocked, the gate stays open to allow traffic to pass through. The two most common reasons for a gate's failure to close, therefore, are moisture on the reflector or sensor and misalignment of the reflector or sensor. Both are exceedingly simple to resolve:

For the south lot entry gate, the sensor is on the side furthest from the building. For the exit gate, the sensor is on the side closest to the person gate. The status light for both is blue when the laser is being properly reflected and red when it is not. If you don't see a blue light, wipe off the laser/sensor or reflector. If that doesn't work, manually twist the laser/sensor box until the light switches from red to blue.

For the north lot, the sensor is on the side closest to the building and the reflector is on the side further from the building. The status light is yellow and green when the laser is being properly reflected and only yellow when it is not. If you don't see a green light, wipe off the laser/sensor or reflector. If that doesn't work, manually twist the laser/sensor box until the green light comes on.

If you are unable to get the status lights back into a "reflected" state, there may be an underlying mechanical or electrical malfunction. Please open a ticket to have it resolved.
