Ask a question:

Microsoft Word documents opening in read-only mode.

Solution There is a known issue with Microsoft Word 2013 where some documents open, but can not be edited. They also display in a way that looks different than normal. It seems that this most often occurs with documents that were sent as email attachments.

To correct this issue, follow these steps:

Launch Microsoft Word

Click "Blank document"

Click "FILE" (upper left corner)

Click "Options"

Click "General"

Find the section labeled "Start up options"

Uncheck the box where it says "Open e-mail attachments and other uneditable files in reading view."

Then click OK to close the Options menu

Close all other open Word windows.

You should then be able to open all documents normally.
